Since we figured out where all our dirty water goes after it goes down the drain (the sewer and wastewater treatment facility), many students wanted to know more about how the water is cleaned at the facility. We're still not convinced on the processes that go on there, because it seems like the water that collects in the sewer gets really, really dirty!
While we had lots of questions about the wastewater facility, and where the water goes after they claim to "clean it," we also realized that we should figure out just how dirty our water gets in the first place. So that's just what we did today...made dirty water! And the only reason we did this was because even though someone suggested we take a bucket down into the sewer and collect some dirty water to work with, we realized that that may be incredibly unsafe to get that water.
Mrs. Brinza brought in a whole bunch of stuff from home, and along with typical science stuff in her classroom, we made observations of the stuff before it was put in the water and then mixed it all in. We truly see just how GROSS the water can get. We mixed it around too, knowing the water in the sewer is moving. The things we added were: chocolate chips, salt, toilet paper, graham crackers, sugar, oil, vinegar, pepper, citric acid, sand, and yellow food coloring (just for kicks since someone mentioned pee...LOL).
