We had LOTS of questions about the fuzzy stuff that appeared in our Dead Stuff Columns! After some research on mold and some really incredible timelapse mold videos, we were able to connect the ideas that mold IS the fuzzy/fluffy stuff appearing in our Dead Stuff Columns.
Here's also what we figured out:
1. Mold is an organism...yup, it's ALIVE! It's actually classified as a fungus.
2. It likes warm, moist environments, but there are some kinds that like cooler places.
3. It grows on stuff it consumes that's dead--like plant parts!
4. Since it's a living thing, it gets bigger as it consumes stuff. This means this pattern of something getting bigger/something getting smaller continues to emerge!

We're onto this pattern...and are now thinking of the raccoon that started this journey. The dead raccoon Mrs. Brinza found was once alive, and it grew from a baby to an adult. If something gets bigger as something gets smaller, how did the raccoon get so big as an adult? Where did it get what it needed to grow bigger and gain weight? What's getting smaller?
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...we're excited!!!
