As scientists, it's important to be able to explain what is happening with a particular phenomena. We're taking a quick pause right now to make sure we understand WHY specific items were removed from the water and why others were not. Check out some students' thinking here:

Models are also used to predict. Based on what students thought were the reasons why something was removed, students were asked why something could not get removed. Here's some of their thinking:

Based on student responses, their ideas were narrowed down into the following reasons why some of the items couldn't be removed:
1. The items dissolved.
2. The items were liquids.
3. The items were smaller than the holes.
4. The items disappeared.
