WE DO! So we began to wonder about other things that eat dead stuff to see if we could see how they change when they eat something, and we figured out that we eat dead stuff too. If the crickets, slugs and worms are getting bigger when the dead stuff they eat disappears, we wondered if that happened to us, too! So with some dead stuff we had lying around at home (ok, fruit!), we brought it into class, weighed ourselves and the fruit before and after we ate it, and saw what happened. While some of us weighed exactly the same (or pretty close to considering error) of the weight of the fruit that we ate, some of us were heavier than the fruit and some of us were considerably "off" from the amount of fruit we ate. We even put that good 'ol bar model to use again (with an unrealistic set of numbers, btw)! |
Our next steps...
To investigate questions we have about food when we eat it. For example, does the activity we do after we eat affect how much weight we gain? Does the type of food we eat indicate how much we gain? How long does it take to lose weight that we don't need? How much weight do we lose when we go to the bathroom? Do we lose weight when we sleep? Students will report back their findings to some of these questions next week!
