Like scientists, engineers must ask questions. Knowing our first unit of the year is mechanical engineering, first graders brainstormed what they already knew about mechanical engineering. We watched Brainpop! Jr.'s simple machines and read through parts of Robert Wells' How Do You Lift a Lion?
1. Mechanical engineers design machines.
2. Machines may have moving parts.
3. Machines need a force (push/pull) to move.
4. Machines make work easier for us (like lifting a lion...or Mrs. Brinza!) :-)
