Sixth graders have officially figured out how different substances can have different odors. But how can we change a substance to actually smell it? We looked at how the temperature of a substance affects the motion of the atoms. Using ammonia as our substance, students timed how long it took for different temperatures of ammonia to reach indicator paper. |
Our findings: It took significantly less time for the warm ammonia to change the indicator paper than the cold ammonia.
How will this help us explain how we can possibly change a substance in order to smell it? Only time will tell!
