Forces and their Interactions

What puts an object in motion?  What are pushes and pulls?  How do different forces cause differences in motion?  Kindergartners will be exploring how forces affect our everyday lives.  We'll be completing lots of experiments and designing force-related solutions!

Forces can get objects to...

MOVE and STOP!
Using rulers and wiffle balls, Kindergartners are exploring how to get a ball in motion and how to get it to stop moving.  There are many ways to do this, and they are continuing to be creative engineers!  Keep up the great work Kindergarten!

Comparing Pulls!

Kindergartners are learning about the differences between pushes and pulls.  They're even comparing the effects of different pulls by using a toy car and a ramp.

They're also working on the practice of modeling, showing their thinking about how something happens.  Awesome job Kindergarten!

Keep up the great work!

Comparing Pushes!

2/5/2015

A push moves an object away from us...but what happens when we push something with different strengths of forces?  Kindergartners are exploring just this!  We're working on understanding forces of different strengths and how to record our observations through a model.

Keep up the great work, Kindergarten!

Pushes vs. Pulls

So how does an object change?  How does an object begin to be in motion?

With a force, of course!  Forces are pushes or pulls.  Pushes move an object away from us and pulls move an object towards us.  Kindergartners will be exploring the effects that forces can have on objects.  We'll be working on creating models to explain our thinking!

What is motion?

An object that is moving is in MOTION!

An object that is moving is in MOTION!

An object that is moving is in MOTION!

YEAH!

Picture
Kindergartners are learning the basics of motion!  We're identifying objects that are in motion and objects that are not in motion, or are stationary!  This lesson is a continuation of our changes lesson.  When there is a change, motion had to have played a part.  When there is no change in an object, it remained stationary!

Looking for Changes...

Picture
Kindergartners are just starting a new unit on forces and their interactions.  To get going, Mrs. Brinza read Changes Changes, a book whose title says it all!

Behind all changes is some kind of force.  Using this picture book, Kindergartners are seeing how most changes can be categorized as a rotation, a flip, or a slide.  We'll see how each of these changes was influenced by some kind of force--either a push, or a pull!

Using pattern blocks, Kindergartners are working on creating images that they can change with a slide, a flip, or a rotation of their choice.  It's a great way to get them thinking about how changes are made!

The push of my coffee maker's ON button is one force I can't live without each morning!

What forces do you depend on in your daily lives?
