Fourth graders are jumping right into solving their first problem this year after reading a small excerpt from Oil Spill! Engineers think extremely critically, and they spend much of their time asking just the right questions when confronted with a problem. Asking questions is actually an everyday practice of an engineer. Learning to ask questions is no easy feat. Questions can be research based, opinion based, or investigative. Research questions can be answered through books, the Internet, or interviewing. Opinion based questions seek answers based on peoples' beliefs, and investigative questions are based on experimental design. We're working on asking just the right questions to begin solving our oil spill problem modeled after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. Fourth graders will eventually develop their own tests to find the best solution to cleaning up a model of an oil spill. |
