Realizing we had come so far since we first met a sick dog named Susie, we've truly figured out SO MUCH about heartworm disease, how it is transmitted, and how various factors can affect different populations in an ecosystem. We're also seeing how all these big science ideas we figured out can help a local community!
A local community within Canine County (where Susie lives and where our deceased dog Buddy used to live) is being asked to generate plans for a dog park the community desperately needs. Not only has there been an influx of dogs over the years due to an increasing population, but the heartworm incidence rates have also risen, sadly.
The mayor is asking our classes of heartworm experts to recommend a location, along with possible changes to the area for a dog park! Mrs. Brinza is so proud to see how students are thinking about so many factors to either limit or reduce the spread of heartworm. Way to go! We also wrapped up our unit answering most of the questions we posted to the Driving Question Board!
