So our beloved 7th/8th grade science teacher retired this past year, and he left behind some interesting stuff...
Always willing to capitalize on anything related to science, Mrs. Brinza took his mess and turned it into a learning opportunity for the 5th graders.

These filthy and quite foul-smelling beakers were filled with remnants left behind from who knows what. But since Mrs. Brinza needs this glassware for upcoming science experiments, students were eager to help!
Each group devised a plan to clean the containers, and here's what sharing out our cleaning processes revealed!

Almost all the groups poured what was in their beakers into the toilets and flushed them. That's because there was some stuff floating in them and it might not be good to put them in the sink. A couple groups didn't have anything solid in them so they just poured what was in their beaker directly into the sink. All groups then used the water from the faucet and soap and a sponge to wash away anything that may have been stuck to the sides of the beaker. Some groups had to use more soap and water than others, based on whatever Mr. White left behind. We all agreed that whatever was in the beaker went into a place that catches water (toilet or sink), that we used clean water to help get off the dirty stuff, and that the dirty stuff, water, and soap ended up down the sink.
We're developing some models now to explain where the water may come from when we go to clean something dirty, and we're also showing where the water goes once it goes into the sink and/or toilet. Check back to see our models!
